Shiatsu
What Is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on healing therapy developed in Japan in the last century.
Based on principles similar to acupuncture, 'energy meridians' and 'points' are treated to restore flexibility, vitality and organ function. Shiatsu works by stimulating the body's vital energy flow ('Ki' in Japanese) in order to promote good health.
What Do I Wear?
You will be fully clothed throughout your treatment. Ideally you should wear cotton or natural fabrics, but most importantly your clothing should be loose fitting, comfortable and warm (e.g. tracksuit, loose fitting trousers, t-shirt). Skirt and jeans are not appropriate. Facilities are available should you wish to change prior to your treatment.
The Treatment
On your first visit you will be asked a number of questions about yourself so that the practitioner can assess your specific needs, then determine how best to treat them. The information you give is strictly confidential and is updated regularly by your practitioner to assess your progress. Recommendations may be given, such as dietary changes, exercises or breathing techniques.
Treatment is normally given on a soft padded mat at floor level, but occasionally you may be asked to sit on a specially designed chair. Also, in conjunction with using their hands, the practitioner may use Bare Foot Shiatsu. This involves using the feet and knees to work on the patient. A different type of pressure is applied, and a wider area can be covered. This type of treatment is slower and less concentrated, meaning it works well on backs and can help loosen joints.
