What Is Psychotherapy and Counselling?
Psychotherapy and counselling are psychological therapies that can help people to explore, understand and manage emotional difficulties and provide an opportunity to make positive changes in their lives. The relationship between the therapist and the client creates a safe place in which to explore and reflect on difficult and confusing feelings.
Historically psychotherapy and counselling have been seen as being quite different: counselling perhaps being seen as short term, pragmatic and focused while psychotherapy might be seen as longer term, aimed more at resolving longstanding and underlying problems. However the generally accepted view now is that there is little difference in the work of qualified and experienced counsellors and psychotherapists. Counselling psychologist is the new term to describe a psychologist who specialises in counselling and psychotherapy.
The practitioners at the Windmill are fully qualified and accredited to practice both as counsellors and psychotherapists. They have worked together since 2003 as associates of “The Ruby Centre” – commencing as a charity, then becoming a community interest company, and now functioning as a talking therapies collective integrated within the Windmill natural health centre.
